Letting God Down

For some reason today, the lyrics to the Jireh song hit me. It said Wasn't holding You up, so there's nothing I can do to let You down. It reminded me that we worry too much about letting God down. To let someone down is to disappoint the expectations that person has about you. Meaning this person has such high hopes in you that they do not expect you to fail and when you do, the person with the expectation feels let down and disappointed. Yes, God has high expectations for you his child, but that does not mean he does not expect us to slip and fall occasionally. We as humans are sinful by nature and so it is in our inherent nature to sin. Knowing this, we are not to worry about letting God down.

Think about it this way, God knows you in and out, he knows what you are capable of and what you cannot do and the one thing we are incapable of doing is not sinning. We sin, we were born sinners and without Christ we will die sinners. He knows your whole story and has made a contingency plan for when you fall, which is Jesus Christ. If you believe that, then even if you fail, you know you are covered. As the song says you are not holding God up so you can't let him down. You may disappoint him sometimes but that is why Jesus is there as the contingency. The bible says in Romans 5:8

But God has shown us how much he loves us, it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!

He could have waited for us to sin before he sent Jesus to die for us, but he did not, he covered our sin even before we sinned.

We tend to believe that our secret addictions, depressions, past mistakes, and failures are so big that they make the king of Kings so disappointed in us that he forsakes us. I mean are we that great that our sin can disappoint the creator of the universe? Do we think that the sin we commit is the worst thing in the world? I mean come to think about it, If God is so disappointed in us for sinning, he could just have the people around us stone us to death like Achan and his family (see Joshua 7). We believe it is easier to wallow in sin and worry about disappointing God than quickly repenting and moving on with our relationship with God. It took me a while to realize that God loves me so much that he places his precious son as my contingency covering over the sin I will commit in the future. Doesn’t that just give you happy chills all over your body? It does for me.

Imagine a friend/spouse/family member loving you so much that they cover your past, present, and future transgression, and every time you repent, they receive you with open arms. You do get chastised, but you are loved, nonetheless. How great will it be if we can all believe that God loves us unconditionally and our sin is not enough to let him down. Can we be convinced like Paul who said I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love which Christ Jesus our Lord shows us. We can't be separated by death or life, by angels or rulers, by anything in the present or anything in the future. How glorious would it be if we believed this and lived our lives with this as a mantra?

Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that you live your life knowing that you will fail. I am saying live your life with the intention to obey God every step of the way, and when you do fail, remember the contingency that is Christ and ask for forgiveness and pick yourself back up again. Your failure was baked into your relationship with God and covered with Jesus’s blood. Remember nothing that was created, is created, and will be created is able to separate us from his love.

You are too important to God so he sent his most important treasure to cover your transgression.
